Greetings again my friends,
I spent the summer teaching a number of retreats around the US and actually only did a handful of performances. It has been nice to take a little break from doing so many concerts and just focus on teaching and developing projects for the future. One of the highlights of my summer months is always my Guruji's master class retreat in Northern California, so I'll try to share a little of each of these retreats. 
皆さんこんにちは。いかがお過ごしでしょうか。

今年の夏は、どう過ごされましたか？私は、アメリカ国内で開催されたいくつかのリトリートでの講師活動に勤しみ、実は演奏活動はほんの数回足らずに終わってしまいました。とはいえ、いくつものコンサートを抱える日々からちょっと抜け出し、講師業に専念して過ごしたり、将来へのプロジェクトを前に進める日々も悪くありません。夏のハイライトといえば、毎年恒例にてカリフォルニア北部で行われる師匠のマスタークラス・リトリートは欠かせません。というわけで、今回はそれぞれのリトリートについて皆さんにお話ししたいと思っています。

I started the summer with being a guest teacher at an amazing camp designed for fiddlers (violinists) but has expanded into many acoustic instruments including guitar, dulcimer, harp, bass, banjo, mandolin and now percussion. In all there about 60 fiddlers and maybe 20 other instrument players, making it quite a full time musical party. 
私の夏は、フィドラー（バイオリニスト）の集う素晴らしい合宿・・ながら、ギターやダルシマー、ハープ、バス、バンジョー、マンドリンなどのアコースティック楽器から今や打楽器（私）まで幅を広げたシェスタ山で行われる合宿にてゲスト講師として参加することで幕を開けました。
 

This year they also invited Kala Ramnath (Indian violin) 
who shared some of the unique aspects of the Indian technique and psychology.
今年は、カーラ・ラマナース（インドバイオリン）も招かれ、インド音楽の技術や心理についても学びました。



Many of the classes are groups like this, all learning old time and
modern songs from the amazing collection of instructors.
クラスはこんな風にグループになって行われ、共に古い楽曲も新しいものも、
粒ぞろいのインストラクターから学ぶのです。

Every evening there are performances featuring the staff and guest artists. This year I got to play with some fantastic musicians. Two of these virtuosic instrumentalists are Billy Contreras (fiddle) and David Grier(guitar). 
合宿中は、スタッフとゲストアーティストによる演奏が毎晩行われます。写真でご紹介しているのは、ビリー（フィドル）とデービッド（ギター）

Actually, I had a wild and fun time late in the evenings with David and my buddies Nate Leath (fiddle), Jesse J Harper (singer / guitar), Jordan Tice (guitar), Simon Chrisman (hammer dulcimer) and Mike Wither (dobro)
playing music and getting to perform some fantastic music with them all. One night David and I stayed up all night playing and telling jokes (he is a joke machine) and sipping on some dangerous liquid, and then at 5:30am, decided to go play some basket ball. We were joined by a collection of others who either had just woken up. Well, I have to say one thing,,, don't play basket ball after staying up all night and drinking,,, because I broke my foot in a not so dramatic jumping move. I knew it when it happened that it was bad and I limped off the court in a great amount of pain. I was hoping it was just a a sprain, but it turns out to be a fracture and two and a half months later I am still limping around in some pain. Ouchhhhhhhh

But man, it was worth it if it meant having these wonderful experiences and fun times with these guys. And actually both David and I are planning a duo CD in 2013 and another project with Billy in the next couple of years. Rock - n - Roll !!!!!!!!!

夕 方遅くに行われたデービッドやネイト（フィドル）、ジェシー（歌手/ギター）、ジョーダン（ギター）、シモン（ハンマーダルシマー）、マイク（ドブロ）た ちとは実にワイルドでたまらなく楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。ある日など、デービッドと私は演奏とジョークで夜を明かしたこともありました（彼は ジョークマシーンなのです）。そして早朝5：30にバスケをしよう！ということになり、その頃起きだした仲間を集めてゲームを始めました。が・・一つ皆様 にもお伝えしておきましょう・・夜を徹して呑み語り明かした朝にバスケをするのは無謀です・・というのも、なんでもないジャンプで足を骨折してしまったの です。というわけで激痛とともにコートを後にすることに・・捻挫でありますようにと願ってはみたものの、結局2か月半後の今でも痛みで足を引きずる始末で す。アイタタタ。

とはいえ、みんなと楽しく過ごした時間は何にも代えがたいものがあります。それに、デービッドとは、2013年に、ビリーとは数年のうちにデュオCDのリリースを予定しています！！

There are also many children at the camp and it is such a joy to see them learn
and have such fun with music from an early age.
合宿にはたくさんの子供たちの姿も見られ、幼少期から音楽に触れ、
学び、楽しむ姿を見られるのも何とも良いものです。

 

Another wonderful connection was with the legendary John Herrmann and the fiddle genius John - I got to play tabla with these two in the style of authentic old time music. What a treat and what a lesson in music too. They shared so much about this seemingly simple music genre, but deep inside, it is a very sophisticated and transformative art form. 
そしてまた、素晴らしいつながりだったのが、伝説のジョンそして、天才フィドラのジョンとの出会い　-　古き良き時代のアコースティックスタイルで演奏する彼らとタブラで共演する機会に恵まれたのです。なんたる光栄、そして大きな学びでもありました。一見シンプルに見られがちなこの分野ですが、実は奥深く、洗練され、応用力にとんだ芸術です。

Then, from that full week in Shasta up until mid August, I had Tabla Retreats and Musical Universe Retreats every single weekend. Again, what an incredible group of folks continue to come out to Boulder for these retreats. Most are from other states around the US and a few even come in from other countires. I am so honored to be able to host these musical families.
そして、1週間のシェスタでの合宿後、8月中旬までは各週、タブラリトリートとミュージカルユニバース・リトリートを開催しました。前回もご紹介しましたが、毎回ボールダーまで足を運び、参加し続けてくれている素晴らしいグループを今回もご紹介いたします！！ほとんどの参加者はアメリカ国内とはいえ別の州からの参加です。こんな素敵な音楽家ファミリーと共に過ごせる私は本当に幸せ者です！

It is such a healthy process for me, going from being a teacher of music to being a humbled student of music. At Zakir Hussain's retreat I always, always get reminded just how vast and deep the art of tabla can go. The level of most of the students is already so high. Many of these students are professional or semi-professional musicians who have been playing since they were children and it really shows. There are some great players there,,, but then, in the presence of the maestro, Zakir Hussain, we all become children again as he shows us all a horizon for music that again and again we loose sight of when left to our own standards. 
講師という立場から、時に謙虚な姿勢で生徒として音楽と向き合う立場へと変わるプロセスは、私の健康を保つひとつの秘訣のような気がします。師のリトリートでは、いつもタブラという芸術の幅の広さ、そして奥深さに気づかされます。このリトリートに参加する生徒のレベルは既にとても高く、ほとんどの生徒は幼い頃からタブラを演奏し、現在プロ、もしくはセミプロの音楽家として活躍しているわけで、中には素晴らしい演奏家もいるのですが・・・巨匠ザキアフセインの前では、皆が、自らのスタンダードに収まることで見失いがちな音楽の夜明けを再び発見する子供に戻るようです。

One of my rolls at Guruji's retreats is to arrange and manage the sound and also teach all the players how to repair and improve the sound of their drums. It is a great honor to be the go to guy for everyone's drum care including Guruji, however, it is also a difficult task to repair 150 drums in just a few days. So I have been slowly training some of the brave souls who want to learn this important art. A happy drum will sing so much clearer and offer a much truer voice of what the tabla has to say. 
師匠のリトリートでの私の役割のひとつに、音響設備の設定や調節、そして参加者全員へのドラムの修理法、手入れ方法の伝授があります。師匠のドラムを含め、参加者のもとへ立寄、手入れをするのは大変な光栄ですが、数日間に１５０ものドラムを手がけるというのはなかなか容易とは言えません。というわけで、何人かの勇気ある精鋭達を少しずつ訓練しつつ、手入れという重要な技術を伝授しているところです。幸せなタブラは、今よりずっとクリアな真の声を持って唄うものです。

As I have said many times in my past diary entries, it is my life honor to assist Guruji Zakir Hussain and have opportunities to be in his presence - I feel like I have soaked up so much of his vibration which helps me to uncover my own true voice. But the most important key which will unlock all that experience so it moves out into the world, is practice! Finding the time and space in our busy lives to really practice the things we love is so difficult sometimes, yet it is deeply important in order for us to bring out into the world the dreams and potential that is our true expression.
これ迄の日記でも綴って参りましたが、師匠であるザキア・フセインのアシスタントをさせていただけるのは、人生でもこの上なく幸せな事と、光栄に思っています。というのも、彼のバイブレーションに浸る事で自分の本当の声に気づかされるような気がするのです。とはいえ、その声を世界に向けて表現するには何にせよ練習第一です！多忙な日常の中で時間と空間を見つけ、熱中できる何かに打ち込む、というのは時に難しくもありますが、真の自己表現である夢や可能性を具現化するには、必須なのだと思うのです。

One the weekends surrounding the retreat with Zakir Hussain, I traveled to Seattle WA and then to Tucson AZ with sarode maestro Steve Oda. As usual, it was a deeply fulfilling musical experience. During our stay in Seattle, my student, equipment maker and buddy Jon Crane hosted and produced the concerts. He did a great job and we had a great time. We did some performing with singer Gina Sala who is a beautiful singer with many talents as a vocalist. Check her out if she comes to your area.

ザキア師のリトリートの後で、私はワシントン州のシアトル、アリゾナのトュさんへサロードの巨匠スティーブ・オダ氏とのツアーへと旅たちました。

Then we ended our little tour with our dear friends and again students Camillo and Cynthia Scherer. They have been with me since 2007 and have consistently been my #1 helpers for the retreats, performances and documentation of the materials. They have become grade A producers in Tucson and we go there every year for concerts and workshops. What a joy, when friendship over laps with professional passion and our work together yields even higher forms of both. Thank you to Jon, Camillo and Cynthia for all their hard work, trusting our connection and their love of serving the community through the living arts. 

シアトルでは、私のタブラの生徒でもあり、タブラ用具メーカーの友人でもあるジョン・クレーンがコンサートをプロデュースし、私たちをホストしてくれました。彼の仕事ぶりのおかげで素晴らしい時を過ごす事が出来ました。また、パフォーマンスでは、歌手のジーナ・サラという美しい声を持つ多才なボーカリストと共演しました。皆さんの街へ彼女が来る、なんて時には是非コンサートへ出かけてみてください。そして私たちは、また別の、生徒であり親友であるカミリオとシンシアとともに、トュサンにてツアーを終えたのでした。彼らは２００７年の出会い以来、リトリートやコンサート、その時々の写真や記録など、本当に良く尽くしてくれる仲間です。トュサンでのプロデューサー振りは、評価A。私たちは毎年彼らを訪ね、コンサートやワークショップを開催しています。友情がビジネスの情熱と重なり、しかも共に勤める事で、友情にも仕事にもいい結果をもたらすというのは、なんて喜ばしい事なのでしょう。ジョン、カミリオ、シンシア・・彼らが絆を信じて尽くしてくれた事、そして、生きた芸術を通してコミュニティへ尽くそうとする愛に感謝します。

Now I am off to Japan to teach at the Wazuka Obubu tea fields retreat and then dive into a number of world fusion concerts with some of Japan's outstanding traditional musicians.
